Let’s be real for a second. Patience is hard. Like, seriously hard. You may be waiting to watch your favorite TV series load on a bad internet connection, or some one who just will not shut up, and you are dealing with something that is so much more serious than what most of us usually deal with, patience is not a natural quality in most of us. The point is that the Quran verses about patience are more numerous than you might expect, and when Allah repeats something in the Quran verses about patience, you know it is important.
The relationship between Quran and patience is deep and transformative. These Quranic verses on patience will change how you view hardship.
I recall that a few years ago, I was in the waiting bay of a hospital and my grandma was asleep after undergoing a challenging operation. Hours felt like days. My cell phone was out of charge, I had no read material and my head continued to swarm over with concerns. That was when I began repeating some Quran verses about patience which I had learned by heart–and, not untruthfully, it was like a warm blanket thrown to me by heart. Allah is simply doing that with the words.
Today I would like to share with you some of the most beautiful Quran verses about patience, describe what they say in simple words and demonstrate you why patience is not just about waiting, but how you wait.
Understanding Sabr: What Is Patience in Islam?
And now before we spring into the verses we had better know what we are dealing with. Patience in Quran is described with the Arabic word Sabr. But Sabr does not sit around and do nothing so you are waiting until something happens. It’s way deeper than that.
Sabr in Islam goes far beyond simple waiting. Sabr means being peace-loving in the face of evil. It entails not venting your frustrations to the whole world when things are not going well. It involves having faith that Allah has a plan even when you are unable to see through. And here comes the thing that struck me as the surprise-to-be-you-know-the-devil, Sabr is to be patient when good things occur, not to be arrogant and forget about Allah as everything is going on well.
The Quran verses about patience repeatedly emphasize the word Sabr and its variations. That informs us of something of importance: Allah does desire us to know and employ this quality. It’s not optional. It is a requirement to be a good Muslim and, actually, to be a happy person in general.

This is likely my favorite among all the Quran verses about patience. It is concise, yet once you consider the message in it, it all becomes different. Surah Al-Baqarah is a major surah about patience with multiple relevant verses. Similar messages appear in Surah Al-Anfal (8:46).
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اسْتَعِينُوا بِالصَّبْرِ وَالصَّلَاةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ
“O believers! Seek help through patience and prayer. Allah is truly with those who are patient.”
(Surah Al‑Baqarah, 2:153)

Read that last part again. Allah is with individuals who are patient. Not Allah will reward them later (although this is true also), but Allah is with them here and now, in this very moment, when they are waiting.
Think about that for a second. When something troublesome is going on, and you decide to remain patient rather than lose your temper, the Creator of the whole universe is by your side. He’s got your back. At least that is the most soothing thought I can think of.
Patience is also related to prayer in the verse. Why? Since prayer is a reminder of who really is in charge. Speaking to Allah directly, we are engaged in prayer. We pour out our hearts. We ask for help. And after praying, somehow things are a little easier. The problem may still exist, yet we become more capable of dealing with it.

Allah Will Test Us All: Endure Patiently
This is one of the Quran verses about patience that every person on this planet should know. Life is going to test you. Not an maybe, but an absolute yes.
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَتْهُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَالُوا إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ أُولَٰئِكَ عَلَيْهِمْ صَلَوَاتٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَرَحْمَةٌ ۖ وَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُهْتَدُونَ
“We will certainly test you with a measure of fear and hunger and loss of wealth, lives, and crops. Give good news to those who are patient—those who, when a disaster strikes them, say, ‘Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.’ Those are the ones who receive blessings from their Lord and mercy, and they are the rightly guided.”
(Surah Al‑Baqarah, 2:155‑157)
Allah enumerates the various forms of how we may be tested, which are fear, hunger, the loss of money, loved ones, the fruits of our labour. He is simply telling you; I will not lie to you that it will be a smooth ride in life. It won’t be. But here is what you do when the bad things happen.
And what their patient ones reply? They say: إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un) — “We belong to Allah, and to Him we will return. This isn’t about giving up. It’s about perspective. All that we possess, our health, our family, our material belongings, they were never and will never be ours in the first place. They’re loans from Allah. And when He resolves to withdraw something we submit ourselves to Him because we trust Him.
The reward for this attitude? Allah Himself blessings, and mercy, and guidance. That would be an excellent bargain in my opinion.
The Reward for Those Who Do Good
At times when you are passing through a difficult period, the question may be, what is the point? Why am I not getting impatient when nothing appears to be changing? Is Allah even noticing?
The answer is found in the Quran verses about patience:
وَاصْبِرْ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يُضِيعُ أَجْرَ الْمُحْسِنِينَ
“Be patient, for Allah does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.”
(Surah Hud, 11:115)

Nothing is lost with Allah. Not even a moment of forbearance. Not a tear single drop you dared not drop when you desired to moan. According to some scholars, patience may even be more fulfilling than most of the good actions since it is very difficult. You are either praying or fasting, which is something active. However, when you are waiting around and being around you are struggling with your own desires, your own wishes, your own frustration, and it is that inner struggle that Allah is very fond of.
Patience Sets the Path to Jannah
Below is one of the Quran verses about patience that seems like a motivational poster except that it is Allah and therefore you know that it is real:
إِنَّي جَزَيْتُهُمُ الْيَوْمَ بِمَا صَبَرُوا أَنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ

Everyone has time to be patient when life comes easy. The ability to wait and endure when the storms strike is the only thing that distinguishes the really successful and all the rest.
The Limitless Reward for Patience
This is one of the most mind-blowing Quran verses about patience. It is with certain rewards to most good deeds, pray and you get this many rewards, fast and you get that many rewards. But patience? Patience has its own reward which is literally unlimited. The rewards of patience Islam describes are truly beyond measure.
قُلْ يَا عِبَادِ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا رَبَّكُمْ ۚ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا فِي هَٰذِهِ الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌ ۗ وَأَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةٌ ۗ إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى الصَّابِرُونَ أَجْرَهُم بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ
“Say, ‘O My believing servants! Be mindful of your Lord.’ For those who do good in this world is good, and Allah’s earth is spacious. Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.”
(Surah Az‑Zumar, 39:10)
“Without limit.” Let that sink in. When we are doing other good things, we tend to count them, one good deed is ten reward, or something of that nature. But to forbear, Allah virtually throws out the calculator. The reward is too big, so tremendous, that it cannot even be quantified.
Why should Allah reward patience with such a huge amount? I believe it is so because He is aware of how extraordinarily difficult it is. He made us emotional, with wants, with the instinct to respond at once when everything does not go as we wish. That is what it takes to have the strength to go over all that and stay calm and to trust in Allah. And Allah rewards strength.

Allah’s Promise Is True
The Quran verses about patience remind us that Allah’s promise is true. He has promised ease after hardship, reward for patience, and His love for those who persevere. These are not empty words—they are divine guarantees from the Creator of the universe.
Patience Is Only Because of the Help of Allah
Here is one of the Quran verses about patience that may appear confusing at first. Allah instructs us to be patient but He also informs us that we have the ability to be patient only with His aid. It is as though He is telling him, I am asking you to do this and I will assist you in doing it.
وَاصْبِرْ وَمَا صَبْرُكَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ ۚ وَلا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلا تَكُ فِي ضَيْقٍ مِّمَّا يَمْكُرُونَ
“Be patient, and your patience is only through Allah. Do not grieve over them, and do not be in distress over what they conspire.”
(Surah An‑Nahl, 16:127)
This verse is addressed to the Prophet ﷺ, teaching him to stay patient and rely on Allah when people reject the message and scheme.
The moral of the story is to all. When others offend us, when they plot against us, when they trouble our existence,–we must keep patient. Yet we ought not to attempt to do it ourselves. We should ask Allah for help.
Make dua for patience. It sounds simple, but it works. You know when you are about to lose your patience, you need only to pause and say, Ya Allah, give me patience. He listens. He helps. And, somehow, you have the strength that you did not realize you had.
What Prophet Muhammad Said About Patience: Hadith and Wisdom
Beyond the Quran verses about patience, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also taught us valuable lessons. Beyond the verses, there are also beautiful Islamic quotes about patience from the Prophet (ﷺ). Let us explore this important hadith about patience. One of his most popular discourses on this subject is difficult and beautiful:
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: “الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الصَّدْمَةِ الأُولَى”
The prophet of Allah (ﷺ) explained: The true forbearance is at the beginning of the adversity.
(Sahih Al‑Bukhari, Hadith 1302)
This hadith was an excellent story. One woman was weeping over the grave as she was devastated with the loss of her child. She was advised by the Prophet (ﷺ) to be patient. She neither knew him nor said, Leave me alone! You have not been seized by a tragedy as mine! When she later discovered the identity of the person who had talked to her, she went straight to his house to apologize. However, the Prophet (ﷺ) said to her that the true patience is in the very moment of shock, when you have already time to relax.
This is so true, isn’t it? The patience of any person comes after days or weeks are over. The first pain is over, you are used to the new reality, and it becomes easier to be calm. However, remaining calm in that very first instance, when the news comes crashing at you like a truck, when your heart is being squeezed to death, when all of you wants to scream over it, then it is the test.
The good news is that though you may not do that first moment so well, you can still get rewarded in being patient at that point. However, the best reward is being able to remain calm at the very beginning.
Attaining Such Goodness: The Gift of Patience
This is another hadith which demonstrates the extent to which the Prophet (ﷺ) appreciated patience. This patience in Islam quotes collection shows the value the Prophet placed on Sabr:
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: “وَمَنْ يَتَصَبَّرْ يُصَبِّرْهُ اللَّهُ، وَمَا أُعْطِيَ أَحَدٌ عَطَاءً خَيْرًا وَأَوْسَعَ مِنَ الصَّبْرِ”
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: And he who is patient, Allah will patient him. No one can be blessed with anything better and greater than patience.
(Sahih al‑Bukhari, Hadith 1469)
Read that first part again. Who is patient, Allah will patientize him. Totally mind‑blowing. The virtue of patience is like any muscle, you grow stronger with the exercising of it. Allah simplifies it in the long-run even when it is difficult.
And the second part? There is no better or larger gift than patience. Consider all that people desire, money, health, success, fame. The Prophet (ﷺ) is simply saying that given a choice of one thing, patience would be the final choice. Since you can endure everything the life throws at you with patience. You won’t get peace without it no matter how much cash money you got.
Prophet Patience Stories: Never Lose Heart
At times we believe that people were more patient in the past or prophets because they had some special relationship with Allah. However, the Quran does not forget us by telling us that even the prophets also passed through the hard tests. These prophet patience stories inspire us to persevere.
وَكَأَيِّن مِّن نَّبِيٍّ قَاتَلَ مَعَهُ رِبِّيُّونَ كَثِيرٌ فَمَا وَهَنُوا لِمَا أَصَابَهُمْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ وَمَا ضَعُفُوا وَمَا اسْتَكَانُوا ۗ وَاللَّهُ يُحِبُّ الصَّابِرِينَ
“How many devotees fought alongside their prophets and never lost heart because of what they suffered in the cause of Allah, nor did they weaken or give in. And Allah loves the patient.”
(Surah Ali ‘Imran, 3:146)
Prophet Ayub (Job) lost money, his children and his health over years. Prophet Yusuf (Joseph), fell into well by his brothers, was sold as a slave, and was thrown in the prison on account of a crime he did not commit. Prophet Nuh (Noah) spent 950 years teaching and hardly anyone was listening. These weren’t easy lives.
These Quran verses about patience show they never gave up and never lost faith. And Allah loved them for it.
This is what I really find strong about this verse: Allah does not merely indicate that He rewards the patient. He says He LOVES them. It is one thing to be rewarded and to be loved. Rewards are purchases; love an affair. Being patient will not only give you points, it will put you closer to the love of Allah.
Persevere in Patience With Others
I would like to discuss one form of patience, and it is the patientness with other people; we all need some patience, right? People are not always easy to deal with. Some people are rude. Some are annoying. Others, they only press all our buttons.
الْمُؤْمِنُ الَّذِي يُخَالِطُ النَّاسَ وَيَصْبِرُ عَلَى أَذَاهُمْ أَعْظَمُ أَجْرًا مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِ الَّذِي لاَ يُخَالِطُ النَّاسَ وَلاَ يَصْبِرُ عَلَى أَذَاهُمْ
The believer who enters into association with others and bears their exasperation in patience will have the better of it as compared to the believer who does not enter into association with others and does not bear their exasperation.
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4032 — Sahih per Darussalam grading)
This hadith has been a game changer to me. I had every reason to believe that the most religious individuals were those that secluded themselves, those who avoided society to contemplate worship. The Prophet (ﷺ) however says otherwise. It is even better to be on the field in the world, have to deal with hard people, and remain patient through all the aggravation.
Think about your daily life. Perhaps there is a school mate that keeps stealing your assignments and never thanks you. Or a colleague who claims that your ideas are good. Or a neighbor that has loud music at night. These individuals drive you mad as no quiet room can do. And each time you curb your wrath, each time you act kindly rather than bitterly, you are buying credits which the hermit worshiper is not permitted to enjoy.
Doorway to Patience Through Allah
On one occasion, the Prophet (ﷺ) defined patience by a very beautiful example:
الصَّبْرُ ضِيَاءٌ
Patience is a lightening lamp.
(Sunan An-Nasa’i)
A torch in the darkness. That’s what patience is. During difficult times, it is as though you are just gropeing in the dark and you do not know where to turn or what to do. But patience lights the way. It makes you observe well even when all things are lost around you.
I like this metaphor since it reminds us that being patient is more than being tolerant, it is about seeing. We become judgmentally cloudy when we are in a hurry. We make rash decisions. We say things we regret. However, once we are patient we will be in a position to reason, look at the big picture and make superior decisions.
Have Sabr to See the Best Outcome
One of the most important lessons from the Quran verses about patience is that Sabr leads to the best outcomes. Prophet Yaqub (Jacob) waited years and was eventually reunited with his son Yusuf. Prophet Ayub (Job) endured immense suffering and was restored to health and prosperity. When we have Sabr, we position ourselves to see Allah’s plan unfold in the best way possible.
How to Be Patient Islam: Practical Steps
Alright, we have discussed the importance of patience and what Quran and Hadith say regarding it. But just how do you get to be more patient? You can learn that you should be patient, and it is totally another thing to really do it when your little brother has destroyed your favorite thing the fifth time this week.
The first step is making dua. Request Allah to be patient in particular. It is a beautiful dua: رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا (Our Lord, pour upon us patience). When you request Allah to assist, he does.
The second one is to keep in mind the bigger picture. When it comes to a frustrating event, stop and say to yourself: Is it going to be important in five years? Will this be the case during the Day of Judgment? The things that make us feel so impatient are most of the time really petite in the big scheme of things.
Third, think about the reward. Each patient hour is being noted. Each deep breath that you take rather than losing your temper is counted. Patience is not so easy but it is something substantial.
And finally—practice. Remember that hadith? Whomsoever attempts to be patient, Allah will patientize him. Whenever you are patient, it becomes a little easier. The first time is the hardest. It may still be difficult a hundred times, but it is not as difficult as it was before.

Sabr Jameel Meaning: Beautiful Patience in Islam
It is a phrase in the Quran that I would like to conclude by: Sabr Jameel–beautiful patience. The Sabr Jameel meaning is patience without complaint, with complete trust in Allah. This concept of beautiful patience in Islam is the highest form of Sabr.
فَاصْبِرْ صَبْرًا جَمِيلًا
Be patient with good patience.
(Surah Al-Ma’arij, 70:5)
Why does being patient feel the second best thing? It is when you patient and you do not whine. It is when you are patient and you do not leave everybody around you sad and upset. That outside, inside of trusting, inside of calm, what made people think, how come you remain so cool when all the world is falling in. And the solution is the same; belief in Allah.
The best example of this sort of patience was Prophet Yaqub (Jacob). His sons informed him that Yusuf was consumed by a wolf. He knew they were lying. His heart was broken, and he did not lose his head. He only held himself together–as though, Yet though they may lie I will hold myself in. Why did he say that? He believed that Allah had the upper hand.
فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ ۖ وَاللَّهُ الْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ
“So patience is most fitting. And Allah is he to whom you address help against what you say. (Surah Yusuf, 12:18)
When the situation only became worse and he lost another son, he repeated himself: “فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ” – beautiful patience. And due to such patience, Allah has at one point re-united him with all his sons. The movie concludes happily; however, it is only because Yaqub (AS) believed in Allah during all those painful years.
You can also have a happy ending. Whatever you are facing at this moment–whatever trial is aching your heart–you should know that it will not last long. You have to know that you can be patient. It is so that Allah observes, documents and is designating something beautiful to those who put their trust in Allah.
