What Is the Adhan (Azan)?

The term Adhan (Azan or Athan) is an Arabic word which means to listen or announcement. In Islamic nomenclature, adhan is the call to prayer a melodic call shouted by the muezzin (the caller) to invite the Muslim Ummah to Salah (Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha).

The Origin of Adhan in Islam

During the initial days of the Islam religion in Madinah, the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) argued over ways of informing Muslims on the times of prayer. There was a hint of a bell, and some of a trumpet. Abdullah ibn Zaid (RA) then had a vision, a man appeared to him and instructed him in the adhan words. Sharing this dream with the Prophet (.RA), the Messenger of Allah verified this dream and ordered Bilal ibn Rabah (RA) — a person with a wonderful loud voice in Islamic history to read the first adhan in Islamic history.

The adhan has been in use since more than 1,400 years ago, and thus, it is one of the oldest audio symbols of the Islamic religion.

Dua After Adhan ( Azan Ke Baad Ki Dua ) Arabic, Transliteration and translation

Reciting the dua after adhan is one of the finest Sunnah practices. According to the teaching of the Prophet Muhammad (Kh), this is the prayer that unlocks the doors of his intercession on the judgment day.

On the Process: How to Do When You Hear the Adhan

Step 1 - Stop and listen carefully

Cease all conversation, shut out all distractions and listen to the words of the muezzin.

Step 2 - Repeat every phrase

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: When you hear the Mu’adhin, say what he says (Sahih al-Bukhari 612). When the muezzin repeats Hayya a la s Salah and Hayya a la l Falah, one will repeat: La hawla wala quwwata illa billah (There is no might nor power except with Allah).

Step 3 - May blessings be upon the Prophet (ﷺ)

A single time who requests Allah to bless him, Allah will reward him ten times.

Step 4 - Recite the Dua after Adhan

Transliteration
Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-d-da’watit-tammah, was-salatil-qa’imah, aati Muhammadan al-Wasilata wal-fadilah, wab’ath-hu maqaman mahmudan alladhi wa’adtihu, innaka la tukhliful mi’ad
English Translation
O Allah, Lord of this excellent call and prayer that is well-established, give Muhammad the right of supplication and excellence, and elevate him to the exalted station (al-Maqam al-Mahmud) which Thou hast promised him. Without doubt, You never keep Your word.

The Virtue of This Dua

The prophet (ﷺ) said: Whoever says this after hearing the call to prayer, my intercession will be allowed to him on the Day of Judgment. Moreover, one of the unique pretences at the time dividing adhan and iqamah is that dua is not repudiated since Sunan al-Tirmidhi 212 and Abu Dawud 437 found the story.

Azan Ke Baad Ki Dua (To Urdu Readers)

The above supplication goes by the name azan ke baad ki dua. Muslims who speak Urdu in Pakistan, India, and diasporas in large numbers search this dua. The practice is the same as suggested by the recommendation, repeat, send salawat and finally recite the dua.

Shia Adhan Times The most important differences clarified

The Shia adhan times are based on Jafari (Ja’fari) madhab of calculation. Although the text of the adhan is quite similar, some significant differences do exist:

Introduction of 'Hayya 'ala Khayril 'Amal' (Come to the best of deeds) - uttered two times after Hayya 'ala-l-Falah
